Il est toutefois envisageable de placer dans un premier temps ce petit cancer bien localisé sous haute surveillance (en anglais : Active Surveillance). En effet, ce type de cancers évolue la plupart du temps lentement et les traitements classiques peuvent régulièrement s’accompagner d’effets secondaires sérieux, tels l’incontinence et les troubles sexuels. Le Centre Fédéral d’Expertise des Soins de Santé (KCE) et le Collège d’Oncologie mettent aujourd’hui des recommandations de bonne pratique à la disposition des cliniciens. Il est préférable que les patients ayant un petit cancer bien localisé soient traités au moment où le cancer commence à évoluer.
