Il rassemble des cartes largement commentées illustrant chacune les différences spatiales d’un aspect de la vie quotidienne. Comment sont logés les Bruxellois dans les différentes zones de la ville, dans quels quartiers se concentrent les grandes familles ou les personnes isolées, quelle est la composition par âge de la population des différents quartiers, où habitent les étudiants, la population active et les chômeurs, comment se distribuent les revenus, comment les Bruxellois des différents quartiers perçoivent-ils leur état de santé, comment se répartissent dans l’espace urbain les personnes hautement qualifiées ou celles qui n’ont été que peu de temps à l’école, comment les Bruxellois perçoivent-ils leur environnement, … L’ensemble illustre la diversité à l’intérieur de la Région bruxelloise. Il offre l’image en mosaïque d’une ville internationale dynamique, bouillonnante et productrice de richesses, mais aussi d’une ville où pauvreté et richesse s’opposent fortement. La Région est confrontée à d’importants défis en termes de logement, d’emploi, d’enseignement, de santé et de bien-être ; autant de déterminants de l’état de la pauvreté. Un tiers des Bruxellois vivent avec un revenu inférieur au seuil de risque de pauvreté. Plus d’un cinquième de la population bruxelloise d’âge actif perçoit une allocation d’aide sociale (RIS, GRAPA, etc.) ou un revenu de remplacement (chômage ou invalidité), et près d’un quart des enfants bruxellois de moins de 18 ans grandissent dans un ménage sans revenu du travail. En ce qui concerne les allocations d’aide sociale, près de six pour cent de la population bruxelloise d’âge actif perçoit un revenu d’intégration sociale (RIS) ou équivalent, et ce pourcentage est plus de deux fois plus élevé parmi les jeunes adultes. Parmi les personnes de 65 ans et plus, une sur huit doit vivre avec la Garantie de revenu aux personnes âgées (GRAPA). Or, les montants des allocations d’aide sociale sont inférieurs au seuil de risque de pauvreté. Tandis que le nombre de personnes avec une allocation de chômage a diminué ces dernières années, une certaine augmentation du nombre de personnes percevant un revenu d’intégration sociale est enregistrée. Le chômage continue toutefois à toucher 17 % des actifs en Région bruxelloise, et 24 % des jeunes actifs de moins de 25 ans. Les inégalités sociales et socio-spatiales sont très marquées en Région bruxelloise : le taux de chômage varie de 9 % à Woluwe-Saint-Pierre à 24 % à Saint-Josse-ten-Noode. Pas moins de 43 170 ménages sont inscrits sur la liste d’attente pour un logement social. Outre le problème du coût du logement, plus d’un cinquième des Bruxellois évoquent des problèmes de qualité importants concernant leur logement. Plus d’un quart des élèves qui fréquentent l’enseignement secondaire présentent un retard scolaire, et cette proportion varie fortement selon la situation socioéconomique des familles. Parmi les jeunes bruxellois de 18 à 24 ans, près d’un sur sept a quitté prématurément l’école sans avoir obtenu le diplôme de l’enseignement secondaire supérieur. Enfin, la situation socioéconomique des personnes influence de façon très importante leur état de santé. Entre les résidents des communes bruxelloises les plus pauvres et les plus aisées, la différence d’espérance de vie est d’environ 2,5 ans. Moreover, population data is lacking and the impact of welfare policies on the caregivers' health has not been yet analysed. METHODS: Associations between general health and care giving, adjusting for differences in employment and socio-economic position, were explored for working age adults using logistic regression models. Data came from the 2001 British census (n = 1,361,222, 5% sample) and from the 2001 Belgian census (n = 4,368,637). The final model was stratified by employment status, given the significant interaction between caregiving and employment status. RESULTS: In both countries, when compared with those providing no care, men and women providing >or=20 h of care per week had an increased risk of poor health. This increased risk was attenuated after adjustment for socio-economic position and particularly after adjustment for differences in employment status. However after stratifying by employment status, a dose response relationship between time spent caring and poor health was observed for the employed and unemployed, but not for the economically inactive. CONCLUSIONS: Despite contrasting welfare systems, employment status plays an important role in the association between caring and health in both countries. For the economically active, providing more care increases the risk of poor health. Whilst formal employment may be good for general health, having to informally care whilst in formal employment may have a detrimental health impact. OBJECTIVES: To investigate what proportion of 3- and 5-year-olds living in Flanders (Belgium) have already visited the dentist, to describe parents' experience about their child's dental visit, and to explore factors that may have an impact on children's early dental visit. DESIGN: Data were collected from 1057 children; validated questionnaires were completed, and children were examined by trained dentist at ages 3 and 5. Logistic regression analyses were performed to explain dental attendance. RESULTS: At the age of 3, 62% and by 5 years, 21% had never visited the dentist. The first dental visit was considered a pleasant experience for the majority of children. Multivariable regression analyses revealed that children who were not first born, whose mothers had a higher educational level and whose parents had recently visited the dentist, had significantly higher odds for having visited the dentist at young age. CONCLUSIONS: Parents of young children need to be informed about and motivated for an early dental visit. Promotion campaigns should focus on firstborn children, children from less educated parents, and parents who do not regularly see a dentist.
