Epidemiologic Methods ; NeoplasmsAbstract: A basic textbook addressed to medical and public health students, clinicians, health professionals, and all others seeking to understand the principles and methods used in cancer epidemiology. Written by a prominent epidemiologist and experienced teacher at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, the text aims to help readers become competent in the use of basic epidemiological tools and capable of exercising critical judgement when assessing results reported by others.
Throughout the text, a lively writing style and numerous illustrative examples, often using real research data, facilitate an easy understanding of basic concepts and methods. Information ranges from an entertaining account of the origins of epidemiology, through advice on how to overcome some of the limitations of survival analysis, to a checklist of questions to ask when considering sources of bias. Although statistical concepts and formulae are presented, the emphasis is consistently on the interpretation of the data rather than on the actual calculations.
The text has 18 chapters. The first six introduce the basic principles of epidemiology and statistics. Chapters 7-13 deal in more depth with each of the study designs and interpretation of their findings. Two chapters, concerned with the problems of confounding and study size, cover more complex statistical concepts and are included for advanced study. A chapter on methodological issues in cancer prevention gives examples of epidemiology's contribution to primary prevention, screening and other activities for early detection, and tertiary prevention. The concluding chapters review the role of cancer registries and discuss practical considerations that should be taken into account in the design, planning, and conduct of any type of epidemiological research.Record link: https://kce.docressources.info/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=791 Hold

* Amply illustrated with figures and tables to enhance visual learning
* Objectives expressed in terms of understanding
Epidemiology is the science that underpins health and health care, and is concerned with the pattern, frequency and causes of disease. This introductory text describes and illustrates epidemiology and its applications to policy making, health service planning, and health promotion. Raj Bhopal developed a conceptual approach to epidemiology in the first edition of this successful text, which involved a systematic focus on underlying concepts and fundamental principles, and this second edition expands upon this popular method. It emphasizes theories and principles, as the bedrock of methodology, countering the mounting criticism that epidemiology is an atheoretical discipline. The interdependence of epidemiological studies and their essential unit within a theoretical, technical and ethical framework is an important theme of this book.
The emphasis is on interactive learning throughout, with each chapter including learning objectives, both theoretical and numerical exercises, recent examination questions from relevant courses, and a summary. The text is richly illustrated, with detailed material summarised in tables. The book is written in plain language, with all the necessary technical and specialised terminology explained and defined in a glossary.Record link: https://kce.docressources.info/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=1498 Hold

Epidemiologic Methods ; EpidemiologyAbstract: In the past thirty years epidemiology has matured from a fledgling scientific field into a vibrant discipline that brings together the biological and social sciences, and in doing so draws upon disciplines ranging from statistics and survey sampling to the philosophy of science. These areas of knowledge have converged into a modern theory of epidemiology that has been slow to penetrate into textbooks, particularly at the introductory level. Epidemiology: An Introduction closes the gap. It begins with a brief, lucid discussion of casualy thinking and causal inference and then takes the reader through the elements of epidemiology, focusing on the measures of disease occurrence and causal effects. With these building blocks in place, the reader learns how to design, analyze and interpret epidemiologic research studies, and how to deal with the fundamental problems that epidemiologists face, including confounding, the role of chance, and the exploration of interactions. All these topics are layered on the foundation of basic principles presented in simple language, with numerous examples and questions for further thought. Bias (Epidemiology) ; Epidemiologic Methods ; Epidemiologic Research DesignAbstract: This book offers a strategy for assessing epidemiologic research findings. Specific tools for assessing the presence and impact of selection bias in both cohort and case-control studies, bias from non-response, confounding, exposure measurement error, disease measurement error, and random error are identified and evaluated. Such information should help those who generate and interpret epidemiological research make a more accurate appraisal of the current evidence and gain greater clarity about research needs.
