Twenty healthy male volunteers were injected in the deltoid muscle at weeks 0, 3 and 6 with 20 microg recombinant E1 adsorbed on alum. A fourth (booster) dose was administered to 19 subjects at week 26. The candidate therapeutic vaccine was well tolerated. Three vaccine doses induced a clear humoral anti-E1 response that was boosted by a fourth dose. A strong, specific cellular immune response towards E1 was elicited in all vaccine recipients, which included a clear Th1 type response in all but one of the subjects. Aujourd'hui, ce sont les usagers de drogues injectables partageant leur équipement qui courent les plus grands risques d'infection. On dénombre environ 2000 nouveaux cas d'hépatite C chronique chaque année. Cette maladie est généralement sans symptôme mais à long terme, une maladie du foie peut se développer. Il est possible d’en guérir mais la durée du traitement et ses effets secondaires font que moins de la moitié des patients se soignent. Le Centre d’Expertise des Soins de Santé (KCE) ne recommande pas de dépistage généralisé du virus. Par contre, le dépistage de groupes à risque peut être envisagé. Pour les usagers de drogues injectables, les mesures préventives telles que les programmes d’échange de seringues usagées et les traitements de substitution, comme la méthadone, semblent surtout prévenir la transmission du VIH.
