Tijdens deze fase is de behoefte aan steun en zorg van de betrokkene vaak groot en deze kan snel evolueren. In de ziekenhuizen en woonzorgcentra is een groot deel van de zorgkosten tijdens de laatste levensfase inbegrepen in de financiering van de instelling. De mensen die de laatste periode van hun leven echter thuis wensen door te brengen, moeten een groot deel van deze kosten uit eigen zak betalen. In ons land krijgen palliatieve patiënten financiële steun, maar deze blijkt niet altijd voldoende te zijn, en hij wordt vooral pas in de allerlaatste levensfase toegekend. Het Federaal Kenniscentrum voor de Gezondheidszorg (KCE) ging na hoe deze financiële ondersteuning beter kan worden afgestemd op de individuele behoeften van deze mensen... maar stelde vast dat er helaas geen ideale oplossing bestaat. Welke uitdagingen stellen zich in het palliatieve zorgbeleid? Wat zijn de werkelijke behoeftes van de zorgverleners, de patiënten en hun naasten? Te vaak wordt palliatieve zorg door zowel artsen als patiënten beschouwd als een verlengstuk van de reguliere geneeskunde. Ze vinden deze zorg pas relevant als alle andere medische opties zijn opgebruikt en het lijkt voor hen alleen van toepassing bij de epiloog van het leven. Deze zienswijze is hopeloos achterhaald. In Palliatieve zorg, meer dan stervensbegeleiding vertellen de auteurs dat deze tak van de geneeskunde zich richt op de levenskwaliteit van de patiënt gedurende de hele ziekteperiode, en zich niet beperkt tot levenseindebegeleiding en pijnbestrijding alleen. Meer nog, tijdige palliatieve zorg kan het leven zelfs verlengen. Bovendien behoren ook mantelzorgers en naasten tot de doelgroep in deze behandeling. Dit boek is een toegankelijke leidraad voor al wie van dichtbij of ver te maken heeft met palliatieve zorg. Gebaseerd op de studies van het FLIECE-project (FLanders study to Improve End-of-life Care and Evaluation tools) brengt het concrete oplossingen naar voren om van palliatieve zorg een volwaardig onderdeel van de geneeskunde en de gezondheidszorg te maken.
