Abstract: ARIF reviews database, a small specialist database which was set up in 1996 not long after the inception of the ARIF service. It has always contained details of systematic reviews of effectiveness of healthcare interventions but over the years, as the scope of systematic reviews has widened to include diagnostic and observational studies, so too has the content of the database. Although the majority of reviews still relate to the effectiveness of drugs, devices or other healthcare interventions, the ARIF database now includes reviews from areas such as transport, criminology, education and even ecology. About 10% of the reviews it contains currently are systematic reviews of diagnostic test accuracy/screening studies. Contents note: Diagnosis

Abstract: A systematic review identifies an intervention for a specific disease or other problem in health care, and determines whether or not this intervention works. To do this authors locate, appraise and synthesize evidence from as many relevant scientific studies as possible. They summarize conclusions about effectiveness, and provide a unique collation of the known evidence on a given topic, so that others can easily review the primary studies for any intervention.
Systematic reviews differ from other types of review in that they adhere to a strict design in order to make them more comprehensive, thus minimizing the chance of bias, and ensuring their reliability. Rather than reflecting the views of the authors, or being based on a partial selection of the literature, (as is the case with many articles and reviews that are not explicitly systematic), they contain all known references to trials on a particular intervention and a comprehensive summary of the available evidence. The reviews are therefore also valuable sources of information for those receiving care, as well as for decision makers and researchers.
As of Issue 2, 2007, this database also includes the methodology reviews that were previously part of the Cochrane Database of Methodology Reviews (CDMR; Methods Reviews).
Methods reviews are full-text systematic reviews of methodological studies. The reviews are both highly structured and systematic. Evidence from methodological research is included or excluded on the basis of explicit quality criteria, thus minimizing bias. Each review covers a specific and well-defined area of methodology. Data from studies are often combined statistically to increase the power of the findings of numerous studies, which on their own may be too small to produce reliable results. In such cases, the review may also include graphs presenting the data from each individual study. Protocols provide place-markers for reviews that are currently being written. They summarize the background and the rationale of the review.

Cochrane Handbook for Diagnostic Test Accuracy Reviews [electronic document] / Cochrane Diagnostic Test Accuracy Working Group, Editor . - Oxford (UK) : The Cochrane Collaboration, 2009.
The Cochrane Diagnostic Test Accuracy Working Group was constituted by the Steering Group of the Cochrane Collaboration to implement the publication of systematic reviews of diagnostic test accuracy within the Cochrane Collaboration.
In October 2007, during the Colloquium in Sao Paulo, the implementation of systematic reviews of diagnostic test accuracy was officially launched.
The DTA working group are producing the Cochrane handbook for reviews of diagnostic test accuracy, developing tutorials for use in RevMan, contribute to the development of RevMan software, have worked with CRGs to develop the editorial process of these reviews and collaborate with all Cochrane entities as necessary to ensure the preparation and publication of good quality DTA reviews in The Cochrane Library
