JF 1525 Political institutions and public administrationAbstract: The need to base policy on evidence has placed pressure on decision-makers to support proposals with well-grounded research and information. However, no practical guide with a focus on public sector policy and decision-making for doing this exists. This edited text fills the gap by providing a practical and comprehensive manual for people working in policy areas. It is aimed at practitioners with little or no experience in research and analysis but who require skills in managing, assessing and critically evaluating evidence use in the public sector. Contents note: 1 Past, present, and possible futures for evidence-based policy -- Sandra Nutley, Isabel Walter and Huw Davies -- Part A Frameworks for using evidence -- 2 Evaluation principles and practice -- Ralph Hall -- 3 A practical guide to cost–benefit analysis -- Leo Dobes -- 4 Multi-criteria analysis -- Wendy Proctor -- 5 Economic modelling and forecasting -- Peter Abelson -- 6 Scenario analysis for strategic thinking -- Gary Saliba and Glenn Withers -- Part B Gathering and analysing evidence -- 7 Using consultants to gather evidence -- Leo Dobes -- 8 Sources and uses of secondary data in research -- George Argyrous -- 9 A user’s guide to sample surveys -- Australian Bureau of Statistics -- 10 Qualitative research methods -- Ralph Hall -- 11 Basic statistical methods for policy and decision-making -- George Argyrous -- 12 Measuring the relationship between variables -- George Argyrous -- References -- Index Record link: https://kce.docressources.info/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=2544 Hold

QZ 50 Heredity. Medical geneticsAbstract: Genetics Home Reference provides consumer-friendly information about the effects of genetic variations on human health.
What information is in the Genetics Home Reference?
Genetic Condition Summaries : Each summary describes the major features of the condition, provides information about the condition's genetic basis, and explains its pattern of inheritance. The summaries also link to support organizations and additional information about the condition.
Gene Summaries : Each summary provides the official name and symbol of a gene, its chromosomal location, an explanation of its normal function, and the health implications of variations in the gene. Each gene summary links to more detailed information about the gene.
Gene Family Summaries : Each summary provides information about a group of genes that share important characteristics. Classifying individual genes into families helps researchers describe how genes are related to each other. Each summary also includes links to additional information, including a full list of the genes in that family.
Chromosome Summaries : Chromosome summaries provide an estimate of the amount of DNA and number of genes for each chromosome and for mitochondrial DNA. Each summary also provides information on how changes in the number or structure of the chromosome can lead to certain disorders.
Handbook : The Help Me Understand Genetics Handbook is an illustrated, basic explanation of how genes work and how mutations cause disorders. It also includes current information about genetic testing, gene therapy, and the Human Genome Project.
Glossary : A glossary of genetic and medical terms is available from every web page. In addition, each summary provides a list of glossary terms used on the page, with a direct link to their definitions.
